Infineon Technologies Austria AG

Infineon Technologies Austria AG, headquarter in Villach, combines research & development, production and global business responsibility. Employees from more than 60 countries have established Infineon as an important leading business in Austria. Infineon is the strongest industrial research company in Austria and is further strengthening its R&D excellence with more than 100 collaborations.

Infineon Technologies Austria AG (IFAT) is a 100% subsidiary of the worldwide operating Infineon Technologies AG. Infineon designs, develops, manufactures and markets a broad range of semiconductors and system solutions. The focus of its activities is on automotive electronics, industrial electronics, RF applications, mobile devices and hardware-based security. Infineon is a world leader in semiconductors. Chips from Infineon play an essential role wherever electric energy is generated, transmitted and used efficiently. In Austria about 1,977 of 4,600 employees are working in the field of “Research and Development”. Hence, IFAT has the biggest R&D unit for microelectronics in Austria.

This requires a high level of comprehensive technology know-how in modeling, design and fabrication. Furthermore, IFAT submits ~200 initial patent applications per year. IFAT has five sites: Villach, Klagenfurt, Graz, Linz and Vienna. In the year 2019 expenses of IFAT in the field of “Research & Development” were ~525 million Euros, which corresponds to 17% of the business volume. The Fab Villach is the innovation center of power electronics at Infineon and a pioneer in Industry 4.0. The site provides competences for exceptionally thin silicon wafers and serial production of power semiconductors in 300-millimeter thinwafer technology.

Role

Infineon Technologies Austria is the project co-coordinator and supports the project coordinator Infineon AG with its project management expertise gained during the execution of large European funded projects. Furthermore, IFAT is the leader of WP4, owner of different use cases and task leader in different WPs. The company brings in the expertise of the competence center regarding innovation of power semiconductor devices across the whole value chain levels chip, package and board/system.

Moreover, IFAT contributes with its knowledge gained as a competence center of Silicon Carbide and Gallium Nitride as well as in the context as an Industry 4.0 pioneer. IFAT also provides an Innovation Fab for industrial demonstration in production environment for iRel40.

Key contribution

IFAT will contribute with new devices for the envisioned demonstrators and with the gained know-how on design, development, testing and reliability expertise gathered during several other projects. In WP1 IFAT will support the definition of requirements and specification for advanced reliability. The development of innovative materials, which will improve the reliability of future semiconductor devices is in focus of IFATs contribution in WP3.

Developing new manufacturing processes and drive for next steps of Industry 4.0 by data management in the context of AI methods is IFATs motivation in WP4. In WP5 the development of advanced testing methods to increase reliability of devices is targeted. In WP6 the assessment and refinement of the industrial pilots running in the production environment regarding reliability enhancement is in focus.
